How to Turn an Old Android Phone Into a Security Camera

Have an old Android phone sitting in a drawer?

Instead of leaving it unused, you can turn it into a simple security camera with CamRelay.

An old phone can be useful for monitoring a room, entrance, garage, workshop, pet area, or other location where you want a live camera.

You don't need to buy a dedicated IP camera to get started.

What You Need

You'll need:

  • An old Android phone with a working camera
  • CamRelay
  • A Wi-Fi network
  • A charger or other suitable power source
  • Another device with a web browser for viewing the camera

The Android phone and the device you use to view the camera should normally be connected to the same local network.

1. Set Up CamRelay

If you haven't used CamRelay before, start by following our beginner guide:

[How to Turn an Android Phone Into a Live Camera →]

The initial setup is simple:

Install CamRelay → Allow camera access → Tap Start → Open the web viewer

You don't need to configure the camera before using it.

Once you can see the live camera from another device, you're ready to turn your old phone into a more permanent camera.

2. Choose a Good Location

Where you place the phone can make a big difference to the usefulness of the camera.

Choose a location that gives the camera a clear view of the area you want to monitor.

Good locations might include:

  • A room entrance
  • A garage
  • A workshop
  • A hallway
  • A pet area
  • A 3D printer or other equipment
  • An area around your home that you want to monitor

Try to avoid placing the phone directly in front of a bright window or strong light source. This can make the camera image too dark in areas that matter.

Also make sure the phone is stable and cannot easily fall or be knocked out of position.

3. Keep the Phone Connected to Power

If you want to use the phone as a security camera for extended periods, connect it to a reliable power source.

Continuous video streaming uses more power than normal phone usage, so relying on the battery alone is not practical for a dedicated camera.

Keep these points in mind:

  • Use a suitable charger and cable.
  • Make sure the power connection is secure.
  • Avoid placing the phone somewhere with poor airflow.
  • Don't cover the phone while it is streaming.
  • Keep an eye on the phone's temperature during extended use.

An old phone can work well as a dedicated camera, but it was not necessarily designed to sit under continuous load indefinitely. Good ventilation is therefore important.

4. Make Sure Wi-Fi Is Reliable

CamRelay streams the camera over your network, so a stable Wi-Fi connection is important.

If the phone is far away from your Wi-Fi router or behind several walls, the connection may become unreliable.

If you experience interruptions:

  • Move the phone closer to the Wi-Fi access point.
  • Check whether other devices in the same location have a stable connection.
  • Avoid placing the phone inside enclosed spaces that weaken the wireless signal.
  • Make sure the phone does not switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data unexpectedly.

For a fixed security camera, a reliable network connection is usually more important than having the fastest possible Wi-Fi speed.

5. Keep CamRelay Running

A phone that is being used as a dedicated camera has a very different job from a phone that you carry around.

Android may try to save battery by restricting apps that run in the background.

Depending on the phone manufacturer and Android version, this can cause the camera stream to stop when the app is put into the background or when the phone has been idle for a while.

If you want to run CamRelay continuously, check your phone's battery and background-app settings.

You may need to allow CamRelay to keep running without aggressive battery optimization.

For a phone that will be used permanently as a camera, it is worth testing the setup for several hours before relying on it.

6. Consider Disabling the Live Preview

When CamRelay is streaming, the camera preview is normally visible on the phone.

That's useful while setting up the camera because you can immediately see that the camera is working.

However, once the phone has been installed as a dedicated camera, you may not need to keep the preview visible.

If you want to reduce battery usage or unnecessary screen activity, you can disable the live preview while keeping the camera stream running.

This is particularly useful when the phone is going to remain in one location for a long time.

7. Check the Camera From Another Device

Once the phone is installed, you can check the camera from another device using CamRelay's built-in web viewer.

On the CamRelay camera screen, look for the web address shown by the app.

It will look similar to:

http://192.168.1.123:8888

Open that address in a web browser on another device connected to the same network.

<!-- SCREENSHOT: CamRelay camera screen showing the web address used to access the built-in web viewer. -->

The live camera should appear in the browser.

<!-- SCREENSHOT: CamRelay web viewer showing the live camera from the installed Android phone. -->

You don't need to install a separate viewing application.

8. What If You Want Recording or Detection?

A live camera lets you see what's happening right now, but you may also want to keep a record of what the camera sees.

CamRelay includes built-in recording, so you can record the camera directly without installing another application.

Recording is disabled by default, so you can choose whether you want to use it.

If you only need a simple camera with live viewing and recording, CamRelay may be all you need.

If you want more advanced functionality such as motion detection, object detection, long-term recording management, or a multi-camera NVR setup, you can also connect CamRelay to software such as Frigate.

A Simple Old-Phone Security Camera Setup

A basic setup can be as simple as:

Old Android Phone

→ CamRelay

→ Wi-Fi

→ Live Viewing + Recording

You can view the camera from a web browser and enable CamRelay's built-in recording when you want to save video.

If you need a more advanced surveillance system, you can add Frigate:

Old Android Phone

→ CamRelay

→ Wi-Fi

→ Frigate

→ Recording + Object Detection

CamRelay can work as a standalone camera, while Frigate can be added later when you need more advanced surveillance features.

Heat

Continuous camera use and charging can generate heat.

Keep the phone somewhere with reasonable airflow and avoid covering it.

Battery

If the phone is permanently connected to power, battery health may become a consideration over long periods.

If the phone supports battery-protection or charge-limit features, consider using them where appropriate.

Wi-Fi

The camera depends on a reliable network connection.

If the phone frequently loses Wi-Fi, the camera will also become unavailable.

Android Restrictions

Android manufacturers may apply different background and battery-saving policies.

If CamRelay stops streaming after the phone has been idle for a while, check the phone's battery and background-app settings.

Your Old Phone Is Now a Camera

With an old Android phone, CamRelay, Wi-Fi, and a power source, you can build a useful security camera without buying dedicated camera hardware.

The basic setup is straightforward:

Old Android phone → CamRelay → Wi-Fi → Live Viewing + Recording

And when you need more advanced functionality, you can connect the camera to systems such as Frigate for features such as object detection and advanced NVR capabilities.
