Daily Wallpapers 0.3.22: Back on Android 6 and 7, with Fewer Crashes

Daily Wallpapers 0.3.22 is now available on Google Play. It's a stability update that follows version 0.3.21 and its new Wi-Fi only option and one-tap widget. Thanks to the crash reports many of you sent automatically, we found and fixed problems that made the app close on some phones.

Back on Android 6 and 7

On phones with Android 6 or 7, Daily Wallpapers closed as soon as it tried to show the wallpaper list. The cause was the library the app used to load images: it relied on a feature that only exists from Android 8.

Version 0.3.22 uses a different image loader that works on every Android version the app supports. We tested it on Android 6.0: the Bing and Picsum lists show their pictures, and setting a wallpaper works as it should.

As a bonus, the new image loader is lighter, so the app is smaller to download.

Picsum photos download again on older phones

On Android 6 and 7, Picsum mode showed a security error instead of photos. The photos are delivered from a server whose security certificate comes from Let's Encrypt, and these older Android versions don't recognize it on their own. The app now includes that certificate for those Android versions only, so Picsum photos load and download normally again.

Two crashes fixed

• Picsum list: the list could close the app when a photo hadn't finished downloading yet. Now the app shows the online preview of that photo instead.
• Crash when opening the app: on some phones the app closed right at start because part of its graphics was missing from the installation. The app now carries the graphics for every screen size, so this can't happen anymore.
